Barbara Mirel

Barbara Mirel is Visiting Associate Professor and a research investigator at the University of Michigan. She has just completed a book Getting the Work Right: Interaction Design for Complex Problem Solving to be published by Morgan Kaufmann (September 2003). She is a member of the Visual Insights venture group at Lucent to lead the usability efforts for commercial applications with interactive data visualizations. With her teammates, she holds a patent for the Visual Discovery design. She was a cognitive engineer with the government and led a field-based task force commissioned by the U.S. Under Secretary of Health to evaluate the safety and usefulness of a newly implemented medication application nationwide.

She has co-edited a volume (published by Lawrence Erlbaum) on new directions
and university-industry collaborations for technical communications and has published numerous articles and book chapters. She received the ACM-SIGDOC Rigo award for lifetime achievement in 2000
